Americans are divided on when, where and how much to give for different services.
What’s worse in recent years, tablets used for electronic payments as well as food delivery apps often include a suggested amount to tip.
The 20 years ago, knowing who to tip was cut and dried. You tipped workers in service jobs like waiters and bartenders, bell hops, hair dressers, taxi drivers and food delivery drivers.
Now, workers at clothing stores, bakeries, and other businesses encourage their customers to make up the difference between what they pay their employees and a livable wage.
미국의 팁 문화가 혼란스러운 사람은 당신만이 아니다. 미국인들도 여러 서비스에 대해 언제, 어디서, 얼마의 팁을 줘야 하는가에 대해 의견이 분분하다. 한술 더 떠서, 전자 결제에 사용되는 태블릿이나 음식 배달 앱에 조차도 권장 팁 금액이 포함되는 경우가 많다. 20년 전에는 팁을 줘야 할 대상이 명확했다. 웨이터와 바텐더, 벨보이, 미용사, 택시 기사, 음식 배달원 같은 서비스업 종사자였다. 그러나 지금은 옷 가게, 베이커리, 기타 업체의 종사자들이 (여기서는 사장), 자신의 직원들에게 지불하는 급여와 생계비간 차액을 고객들이 메꾸도록 부추기고 있다.
