Power Warm-up:
Myra has a class reunion coming up soon and she doesn’t want to look old to her classmates. The event is in about a week, so her doctor said she only has a few options.
마이라는 곧 동창회가 열리는데 동기들에게 늙어 보이고 싶지 않아요. 행사가 일주일 정도 밖에 남지 않았기 때문에 의사는 제한적 방법 밖에 없다고 말합니다.
Power Expressions
- Touch-up: 관리, 약간의 손질 (Minor plastic surgery, cosmetic procedures, 시술)
- Getting a touch-up: 관리 받다. 시술 받다.
- What brings you in today? 오늘은 무슨 일로 오셨나요
- Turn back the clock = take off some of the age. 시간을 되돌리다.
- You look like you turn back the clock = you look so young: 젊어 보인다.
- Cf) Turn back time: 과거로 돌아가다.
- Spur-of-the-moment: 즉흥적인, 충동적인
- Put someone on the spot: take up some responsibility. 부탁이나 질문 등으로 난처하게 하다.
- Your options will be limited: 할 수 있는 게 많지는 않아요.

Myra: Well I think I need a touch-up. I’ve got my 35-year class reunion next week and I don’t want to look….old.
Dr. Kendrick: Okay. I guess there are a few things I can do that will turn back the clock at least 10 years.
Myra: It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to go, so I’m sorry to put you on the spot.
Dr. Kendrick: Well, with only a week to heal, your options will be limited.
Myra: I understand Dr. Kendrick.
켄드릭 박사: 안녕하세요, 마이라! 오늘은 무슨 일로 오셨나요?
미라: 관리가 좀 필요한 것 같아요. 다음 주에 35주년 동창회가 있는데 늙어 보이고 싶지 않거든요.
켄드릭 박사: 좋아요. 제가 할 수 있는 방법이 몇 가지 있는데, 적어도 10년은 젊어 보이게 될거에요.
마이라: 충동적으로 결정한 거라, 선생님을 난처하게 해 드려서 죄송해요.
켄드릭 박사님 치료 기간이 일주일밖에 남지 않아서, 할 수 있는 게 많지는 않아요.
마이라: 켄드릭 박사님 말씀 이해해요.
Power Note
1. Turn back the clock: 시계바늘을 되돌리다.= to get back one’s youthful appearance.
Turn back the clock means that you’re looking young younger as if you went back in time.
1)
A: Will this laser skin treatment make me look younger?
B: It will definitely turn back the clock 10 years.
A: 이 레이저 피부 시술로 제가 젊어 보이게 될까요?
B: 분명 10년 전으로 되돌아갈 거에요.
2) Everyone wishes they could turn back the clock as soon as they start to look old.
모든 사람들은 나이 들어 보이기 시작하자마자 예전으로 돌아갈 수 있길 바란다.
2. Spur-of-the-moment: 즉석의, 즉흥적인, 충동적인: occurring very suddenly
Spur-of-the-moment is it occurs very very suddenly unexpectedly
1)
A: I know this is spur of the-moment but my boss is sending me to Tokyo tomorrow.
B: Are you serious? Why don’t you just say no?
A: 이게 충동적이라는 거 아는데, 우리 사장님이 나를 내일 도쿄로 보내신대.
B: 정말이야? 그냥 싫다고 말하지 그래?
2) We decided to take a trip to Switzerland on the spur of the moment.
우리는 충동적으로 스위스 여행을 가기로 결정했다.
3. Put someone on the spot: 부탁이나 질문으로 난처하게 하다. To force someone to do or say something instantaneously.
1)
A: I hate to put you on the spot but I need you to watch Jason for a few hours.
B: No problem, you go do whatever you need to do.
A: 너를 난처하게 하고 싶지 않지만, 제이슨을 몇 시간 봐 주면 안될까?
B: 문제 없어. 가서 할 일 해!
2) Carlos put me on the spot when he asked me to be his best man at his wedding.
카를로스는 나에게 자기 결혼식에 들러리가 되어 달라고 부탁하며 나를 난처하게 만들었다.
4. I understand..: 이해해요. 알겠어요.(공손한 표현)
I understand it’s just another way of saying I got it but a little bit in a formal context.
1) I understand, Shelly. Let’s have lunch when you’re less busy.
알겠어요 셀리. 덜 바쁠 때 같이 점심 먹어요.
2) I understand but it’s really important.
알겠어. 근데, 이건 정말 중요해.
5. Touch-up: 손질, 덧칠, 가벼운 시술
A touch-up is a minor cosmetic treatment. For instance, a car with scratched paint may get a touch-up instead of a full paint job. A person may get a minor touch-up that improves their appearance.
Touch-up은 미용을 위한 가벼운 치료입니다. 예컨대, 차량에 긁힌 자국이 있으면 완전한 도색 대신 touch-up을 하면 되고, 사람도 외모 개선을 위해 소소한 touch-up을 받을 수 있습니다.
