Sign language is a visual language used by people who have hearing impairments. Korean sign language is an independent language, just like Korean or English. I’ve been learning sign language since March this year. At first, it was just out of personal curiosity. But as I continued learning, I began to realize and feel so much more.

Sign language relies on hand and finger shapes and the direction, position, and movement of the hands. It also depends heavily on the speaker’s facial expressions. Each element changes the meaning.

As I learn sign language, I sometimes also do volunteer work. It felt awkward at first, but now I know how warm-hearted everyone is. It has opened my eyes to a whole new world.

I think building a more inclusive world starts with understanding and caring for one another.
