🌿 Intro: Andong, the City of Scholars

Andong is known as the spiritual capital of Korea and a city where Confucian culture still breathes. It is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hahoe Folk Village, as well as historic Confucian academies such as Dosan Seowon and Byeongsan Seowon. The city is lined with numerous ancestral residences of Korean scholars.

You can also explore the Yi Yuksa Literary Museum, dedicated to the poet of resistance Yi Yuksa; the Hahoe Mask Museum, showcasing Korea’s mask heritage; the fantastic night view at Woryeonggyo Bridge; the colorful Sinse-dong Mural Village; and of course the famous Andong Jjimdak Alley for local flavors — a perfect blend of culture, history, and cuisine.

🇰🇷 Why You Should Try Korail “Jiyeoksarang (Love Local)” Tours Across Korea

If you want to see the real Korea beyond Seoul, Korail’s “Love Local” train tours are one of the best ways to do it —
affordable, organized, and full of hidden local experiences that ordinary tourists often miss.

These government-supported packages connect major cities nationwide — from Seoul and Gyeonggi to Gangwon, Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Busan
combining KTX or local trains with curated city or theme tours chosen by local residents.

💸 Budget-friendly: Usually priced under ₩100,000, including a KTX ticket (often one-way) and local tour.
🚆 Wide coverage: Routes span the whole country — from coastal trips and cultural heritage tours to seasonal flower and food festivals.
🏞 Authentic experiences: Every itinerary highlights real local favorites, not tourist traps — places Koreans actually visit.

⚠️ Real Talk: Language & Booking Limitation

Korail’s “Love Local” tours and local city-run programs are popular among Korean travelers for being affordable and practical., but they currently don’t support English booking pages or foreign payment options.
Most tours are conducted in Korean only, and on-site commentary is rarely translated.

If you can’t read Korean, it’s best to:

  • Ask a Korean-speaking friend to help with booking, or

  • Join English-speaking small-group or private tours on Klook or GetYourGuide for a similar route and more flexibility.

💬 But here’s the good news:
Once you’ve made your booking, you’ll find that almost every Korean you meet will gladly help you — whether they speak fluent English or not.
It’s part of the warm, welcoming travel culture that makes exploring Korea so special. 🇰🇷💖

💡 Tip for International Visitors

Even without joining the official Korail program, you can still follow the same routes independently by train.
Klook and GetYourGuide offer English-guided versions of many Korail itineraries —

V. 🏯 Andong’s Major Attractions (Historical & Cultural Highlights)

🏡 Hahoe Folk Village (河回村)

Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Korea’s most iconic folk villages and home to the Pungsan Ryu clan for over 600 years.
Encircled by the Nakdong River in an elegant S-shape, the village beautifully preserves traditional Confucian houses and thatched cottages.
It gained global attention after visits from Queen Elizabeth II (1999) and President George H. Bush (2005).
Designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage site, Hahoe is also famed for its Hahoe Masks, a National Treasure.
At the village’s open-air stage, visitors can enjoy the Hahoe Byeolsingut Mask Dance Drama, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, offering a vivid glimpse into Korea’s traditional performing arts.

🏛️ Dosan Seowon (陶山書院)

Dosanseowon Confucian Academy, founded by the followers of scholar Toegye Yi Hwang (1501–1570), embodies the core of Korean Confucian heritage.
The complex consists of Dosanseodang, built by Yi Hwang himself in 1561 as a study hall and residence, and Dosanseowon, completed in 1576 to honor his legacy.
The academy’s main shrine, Sangdeoksa, enshrines Yi Hwang’s ancestral tablet, while Jeongyodang Lecture Hall served as the center for scholarly gatherings.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it also gained popularity through the K-variety show “I Am Solo”, where participants dressed in hanbok met in this serene setting.
Visitors can stroll along the surrounding trails to see the Sisadan Stele and ancient willow trees symbolizing centuries of scholarship and tradition.

📚 Byeongsan Seowon (屛山書院)

Byeongsanseowon Confucian Academy, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, traces its roots to Pungakseodang School from the Goryeo dynasty.
It was relocated to its current site in Byeongsan in 1572 by scholar Yu Seong-nyong (penname Seoae) and officially renamed in 1614.
The academy received royal recognition in 1863, granting it state support as a private Confucian institution.
During the Japanese occupation, both the lecture hall and shrine were restored in 1921 and 1937 to preserve its legacy.
Today, it remains a designated Historic Site, housing over 1,000 documents and 3,000 books, including the works of Yu Seong-nyong.

🌉 Woryeonggyo Bridge (月映橋)

At 387 meters, the longest wooden pedestrian bridge in Korea, Woryeonggyo—meaning “reflection of the moon”—is especially stunning at night. It was inspired by a Goryeo-era legend of a devoted couple at Woryeongjeong Pavilion. Today it’s a favorite photo spot for couples.
At night, the bridge glows with lights and a music fountain, creating a romantic ambience. Cultural performances are held every summer and autumn.

🏯 Bongjeongsa Temple (鳳停寺)

Bongjeongsa Temple was founded in 672 CE by Monk Neungin, a disciple of Uisang, during the Silla Dynasty.
The temple’s location, once called Daemangsan, was renamed Cheondeungsan (“Heavenly Lantern Mountain”) after a celestial maiden illuminated a cave where Neungin was meditating.
Later, he folded a paper phoenix that miraculously flew and rested here, inspiring the temple’s name Bongjeongsa — “Temple Where the Phoenix Rests.”
The complex has been rebuilt several times and houses National Treasures such as Geungnakjeon Hall and Daeungjeon Hall, along with several historic pavilions and hermitages.
Renowned for its serene beauty, Bongjeongsa was even visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.

✒️ Yi Yuksa Literary Museum

Built on the birthplace of resistance poet and independence activist Yi Yuksa (1904–1944), this museum commemorates his spirit of patriotism found in poems such as “The Wilderness” and “The Green Grapes.” Artifacts and original manuscripts are on display.
Visitors can also taste Andong’s local Cheongpodo (grape) wine next door and enjoy riverside walks overlooking the Nakdong River.

🪶 Yekki Village & Seonseong Waterside Trail

Yekki Village, located in Seoburi, Dosan-myeon, Andong, was established in 1976 for residents displaced by the construction of the Andong Dam. Although it is officially part of Seoburi Village, many locals still affectionately call it Yean Village, after their original hometown.

Once one of the most prosperous commercial hubs in Andong, Yean Village fell into decline after being submerged under the dam’s waters. In 2015, thanks to a collaboration with renowned art director Han Gemma, the Dosan Seoburi Art Village Project began — giving birth to what is now called Yekki Village, meaning “a village full of artistic spirit.”

The village was reborn through art: alleys were restored, mural walls were painted, and shop signs were redesigned with creativity and charm. Historic buildings were also transformed — the old Seonseonghyeon Government Office became the Hanok Gallery Geunmindang, the village hall turned into artists’ studios, and the post office was reborn as a craft workshop.

Today, Yekki Village stands as a living story of rebirth — where tradition and art harmoniously coexist, breathing new life into a once-forgotten community.
